MY DIRTY SECRET
Food was my dirty secret and one I’d become good at hiding. Sadly my spiralling weight wasn’t. Doctors had warned me just days before that, at 21, I was a heart attack waiting to happen.
I was a whopping size 48 and 160kg but I had accepted that was how it would always be. It wasn’t until I went for a job as a kitchenhand that things changed.
I had a medical and was told my blood pressure was dangerously high. “It’s probably just nerves,” the nurse said. “But you should get checked by your doctor.”
I agreed and a week later received the shocking news. “You could die next week from a heart attack,” the doctor said bluntly. “I’m 60 and have better blood pressure than you – it’s time to lose some weight.”
It was like a smack in the mouth – at 21 I hadn’t even been kissed. Dying certainly wasn’t an option.
EASY WITH OPTISLIM
In a desperate attempt to change I tried to go jogging in my lunch breaks. Each day I’d wheze through just 100m, exhausted. But each night I’d stop off for takeaway. I felt so ashamed but I couldn’t help myself.
“Are you trying to lose weight” a colleague asked one day.
I frowned as she pulled out a massive pair of pants from her locker, which looked like they belonged to the circus!
“I used to be this big,” she said with a smile. “I did this shake diet. One for breakfast. One for lunch. It really worked.”
I struggled driving past KFC but somehow I managed it. In the first week I lost 10kg. Soon I could jog for a whole hour. Over the months the weight started dropping off. In 6 months I lost 50kg and had to keep buying new pants as they hung off my hips!
I’ve lost 85kg and weight 75kg – less than when I was 13. My target was 85kg and now I’m a healthy weight for my 180cm height. I feel amazing and losing weight has been a major confidence boost.
